Methodology

This uses the US Navy tape method, which is a reasonable estimate for most people. Values are approximate and may differ from DEXA or caliper measurements.

About this tool

The body-fat calculator uses the US Navy circumference method to estimate body-fat percentage from tape measurements. Enter your neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements along with height, and it returns an estimated body-fat percentage plus the category it falls in. It is the most practical body-fat estimate without calipers or a DEXA scan.

How to use it

  1. 1 Measure your neck and waist at the narrowest points (women also measure the hips at the widest).
  2. 2 Enter your measurements and your height.
  3. 3 Read your estimated body-fat percentage and category.
  4. 4 Use the number to set a target or track progress over time.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the US Navy body-fat method?

It is accurate within about 3 to 4% for most people, which is comparable to skinfold calipers when done correctly. DEXA scans are more accurate but expensive. The tape method wins on cost and convenience for tracking change over time.

Where exactly do I measure my waist and neck?

Measure the neck at its narrowest point below the larynx, and the waist at the navel (for men) or the narrowest point above the navel (for women). Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing the skin.
