# Thymosin Alpha-1

*Also known as: Tα1, Thymalfasin, Zadaxin*

Thymic peptide that modulates innate and adaptive immunity; used clinically in some viral hepatitis settings.

## Overview

Thymosin alpha-1 (thymalfasin) is a 28-amino-acid peptide produced by the thymus gland that modulates both innate and adaptive immunity. It promotes T-cell maturation and activation, stimulates dendritic cells and natural killer cells, and shifts the immune response toward a Th1 profile, which is why it has been studied in chronic viral infections, immune deficiency, and as an adjunct in certain cancers. As Zadaxin, it is approved in several countries (though not the US) for viral hepatitis and as an immune adjunct. Its half-life is roughly two to three hours with around 50% bioavailability, typically delivered as a subcutaneous injection. Unlike most peptides on this list, thymosin alpha-1 has a real international clinical evidence base. It should not be confused with thymosin beta-4, which is a different compound entirely.
