## Overview

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted peptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding cardiolipin. That binding stabilizes the membrane, supports the respiratory chain supercomplexes, and reduces reactive oxygen species production. It is studied for conditions driven by mitochondrial dysfunction, including kidney disease, heart failure, and Barth syndrome. SS-31 has an estimated half-life of roughly two hours and about 50% bioavailability. Elamipretide has a solid clinical evidence base for a research-stage peptide, with multiple Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials across renal, cardiac, and ophthalmic indications. It received fast-track and orphan-drug designations from the FDA, though it is not yet approved.
