## Overview

DNP (2,4-dinitrophenol) is an industrial mitochondrial uncoupling agent that was briefly prescribed for weight loss in the 1930s before being abandoned after documented fatalities, and it remains one of the most hazardous compounds encountered in self-directed use. It carries protons across the mitochondrial inner membrane, bypassing ATP synthase, so energy from nutrient oxidation is released as heat rather than stored, raising metabolic rate and body temperature in direct proportion to dose. The compound has a very long roughly 89-hour half-life, so accumulation across consecutive doses is rapid and a small increase compounds over days, and there is no antidote once toxicity begins. Effects include rapid weight loss through thermogenesis, while the documented and frequent risks are hyperthermia, tachycardia, dehydration, cataracts, agranulocytosis, and death, with a narrow margin between a perceived working dose and a fatal one.
